Basics of LED drivers: Functions, Requirements, Selection

This article is meant to provide the reader with basic knowledge about the functional principle of LED luminaires, to explain the requirements for an LED driver and to help find an appropriate driver for a specific application. This requires basic knowledge of physical processes which describe the electroluminescence. In this respect different switching concepts for LED luminaires are described.

LED driver family with compact design

FRIWO's LT line feature voltage and current regulation in a single device. With power ratings from 10 W, 20 W, 60 W and 100 W FRIWO offers a product portfolio of extremely compact LED power supplies. All drivers with more than 20 W output contain an active PFC with a power factor of at least 0.95.

Due to the wide range input of 198 to 264 VAC, an efficiency rate of at least 86 % and an extremely compact design of 30 mm x 21 mm (LT10 - LT60) and 30 mm x 24 mm (LT100) are feasible.

All LTs meet the safety approvals EN61374-1 as well as EN61374-2-13 and are protected against overvoltage, overcurrent and short circuit. The drivers comply with protection class IP20 (LT40 also available as IP67 model). With the downstream DIMMbox, which works with all LED drivers of the LT series, a cost-effective and extremely energy-efficient PWM dimming can be achieved by either Dali, SwitchDim or analog 1 - 10 V.
